Abstract
The electronic states of quantum point contacts were studied using the spin-density-functional method. It was found that a local moment with a spin of 1/2 is formed in the vicinity of the QPC barrier. For the local moment, estimates were obtained for both the on site Coulomb-interaction energy and the hybridization to the leads.
