Abstract
The fundamental aspects of local density fluctuations associated with general point patterns in any space dimension were studied. The variance in the number of points contained within a regularly shaped window of arbitrary size was also studied. It was observed that the lattice associated with the densest packing of congruent spheres possess the smallest variance with respect to the face-centered cubic lattice. The result suggest that the local variance serve as a useful order metric for general point patterns.
