Abstract
Esin and I are utterly heartbroken and saddened by the news of Richard’s passing. I really loved him and feel very fortunate to have known him. Though I am not very good with faces, his beautiful smiling face is surprisingly crisp in my memory. I was in Doug Stone’s research group 1999–2003 and had the fortune to collaborate with Richard on several projects. Those collaborations and my interactions with Richard as a scientist and mentor during that period set a defining example for me. But perhaps as importantly, Richard’s human side has left with us a profound and lasting impression of how to live this life. We cherish the memory of when you and Richard hosted us so graciously at your home in Vermont and vividly remember feeling the strong values that tied your family together….
