Abstract

The article argues that the labor of entertainers in hostess bars is not just unskilled sexual labor but instead involves the cultivation of the skilled care work of bolstering the masculinity of customers. The article is based on three months of participant observation in a hostess club in Tokyo and 56 in-depth interviews with hostesses.
