This work was started during the 1985 fall term while L.W. was at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, N J, and he wishes to thank the members of the Institute for their hospitality. The authors profited from conversations with David B. Fairlie at the Institute during this term. We also want to thank Xi-Zeng Wu of the University of Cincinnati for checking the calculations of the equations of motion. The research was supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grant number NSF Phy-8505410 and Phy-80-19754 and in part by the Department of Energy under grant number FG 02-84ER 40153.

N2 - We verify by an explicit perturbative calculation arguments presented recently concerning the existence of compactified solutions of superstring theory in which the spin connection is not embedded in the gauge group in the standard way but the gauge connection is a connection on a more general holomorphic vector bundle over a manifold of SU(3) holonomy.
