Abstract
A novel mechanism for transferring energy directly from a fast-ion population to bulk thermal ions in a magnetically confined toroidal plasma with low-aspect ratio is illustrated. The mechanism involves stochastic heating of thermal particles by compressional Alfvén waves driven by the super-Alfvénic fast particles.
