Abstract
The measurements of metastable argon-ion velocity distributions on the major axis of an axisymmetric magnetic-mirror device whose plasma was sustained by helicon wave absorption were reported. The measurements were done by using laser-induced fluorescence. It was found that the metastable argon ion energy increased sharply at the orifices and then continued to increase to ∼4× the electron temperature in the main discharge.
