abstract = "The purpose of this paper is to present an application of global optimization techniques to the problem of the enhancement of images. After reviewing the general strategy which is common to most modern enhancement method based on the solution of a variational problem, we explain the rationale behind the choice of our penalization formulation and we give the details of the practical implementation. Finally, we illustrate the efficiency of our approach by presenting the results obtained in preprocessing side-scan sonar images of the sea-bottom for the purpose of mine detection.",
