Abstract

A study on the interaction between TiO2 nanoparticles and Nafion® in TiO2 composite membranes that are being developed for elevated temperature PEM fuel cells is carried out to determine the types of interactions present and the influence of particle size on the interactions. TiO2 interacts with the sulfonate groups in Nafion resulting in crosslinking of the polymer. Particle size and membrane preparation techniques impact particle interaction with Nafion. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 230th ACS National Meeting (Washington, DC 8/28/2005-9/1/2005).
