Abstract

A study of insulating and fractional quantum Hall states in the first excited Landau level (LL) was performed. A number of new insulating electronic phases was observed in the first excited LL of ultraclean 2D electron systems. Eight isotropic insulating states exhibiting integer Hall quantization was found interposed between various even and odd denominator fractional quantized Hall states.
