Abstract
The linear microstability of a cross-field-carrying plasma was studied using a dispersion relation that includes kinetic and finite-beta effects as well as those of electron collisions. Comparisons were made to the better-documented cases of purely electrostatic modes (βe=0) or collisionless electrons (νe=0). Conclusions pertaining to the change in the fundamental character of the instability for the case of an equithermal plasma (Ti/Te∼1) in which electron collisions are important were drawn.
