Abstract

Hyperpolarized [Formula Presented] gas, where the nuclear spin polarization has been increased to several tens of percent by optical pumping, can couple such a large negative resistance into an external circuit that masing can ensue. The masing threshold can be suppressed by application of a magnetic field gradient. However, edge enhancement, that is, the less effective diffusional damping of the precessing magnetization at the container walls, can lower the masing threshold. The edge enhancement of the masing is greatly modified by magnetic self-interactions of the spins.
