Abstract
This essay gives an account of the role of the comedic genre in the early Enlightenment theatrical reforms. I. argue that generic unity requires the exclusion of comic forms that endanger the internal continuity of the dramatic events. Instead, Enlightenment comedy articulates a model of human fallibility that ensures the concatenation of individual episodes.
