Abstract

The compounds LuNi2B2C and LuNiBc have been studied with high-resolution electron microscopy, electron diffraction, elemental analysis and X-ray powder diffraction. LuNi2B2C and LuNiBC adopt layer structures with sequences (B-Ni2-B-LuC)n and (B-Ni2-B-LuC-LuC)n and have tetragobal unit cells of a=0.346, c=1.063 nm, and a=0.350, c=0.776nm, respectively. Intergrowths of the two structures are observed, as are planar defects. The fraction of intergrowths and planar defects is small, and is only dominant in the batches prepared under unfavorable conditions.
