Hall magnetohydrodynamic ballooning instability in the magnetotail

Abstract

The Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) ballooning instability in the magnetotail was analyzed. It was observed that the Hall MHD effect enters the stability analysis through changes introduced in the plasma compressibility. The analysis showed that Hall effects also introduced the entropy interchange instability which was a variant of the ion temperature gradient instability.
