Abstract

The duality between theories of gravity on anti-de Sitter space and conformal field theories in one less dimension (AdS/CFT) has provided a new geometrical tool for understanding the strong coupling dynamics of gauge theories-including confinement. It has also led to new insights into string theory and the dynamics of D-branes. I present a brief overview of these developments.
