Abstract
Kerry first came across Anne via her work on üOrnamentalism, ü which Anne describes as a üfeminist theory for the yellow woman. ü Anne uses the term üornamentalismü to denote how East Asian women have historically been cast as both people and things, specifically Oriental üornaments. ü This ornamentalization makes the üyellow womanü ütoo aestheticized to suffer injury but so aestheticized that she invites injury. ü For Kerry, it was one of the first times sheüd experienced feminist scholarship that spoke so deeply and directly to her own experiences as an New Zealand Asian woman; Anne herself refers to writing this book as a form of therapy. Before Anneüs work, Kerry had never encountered such in-depth feminist theorizing on the figure of the üyellow woman, ü and Anne wrote Ornamentalism in part to respond to the ütheoretical black holeü that surrounds Asiatic womanhood in US-based critical theory. Kerry was so nervous to interview Anne for The Good Robot podcast, but Anne immediately put her and Eleanor at ease. Anne is a brilliant thinker and an exquisite writer, and her beautiful essays in The Nation and the LA Review of Books partially inspired this book. Anneüs work balances sharp critique with poetic reflection, and her scholarship continues to lay the groundwork for Asian American feminists for decades to come.
