General circulation of the atmosphere

Abstract

Extensive processing of aerologic data has been made by using high‐speed electronic computers. They have yielded better descriptions of the global distributions of various quantities such as wind, temperature, and, particularly, the meridional circulation. Taljaard et al. [1969] extended the analysis of the northern hemisphere by Crutcher [e.g., Crutcher and Meserve, 1970] to the southern hemisphere and obtained the monthly mean fields of geopotential height, temperature, and dew point by compiling the massive observational data. These results have been published in convenient map form and are also available on magnetic tape.
