Abstract

In this work we discuss a recent explanation for the observed edge losses during High Harmonic Fast Wave (HHFW) heating and current drive in NSTX. According to our explanation, the edge losses are due to the resonant excitation of surface waves which flow in the parallel direction along naturally occurring density filaments in the edge plasma. Going beyond the approximations of earlier work [1], we discuss additional complexities which arise in a full-wave description of the surface wave dispersion relation, and the possible, if in our opinion unlikely, relevance of this loss mechanism outside of the HHFW regime.
