N2 - A constructive procedure for generating a prescribed unitary transform via the optically driven evolution of a multilevel atom is described. Assuming a clean separation of the coupled levels, the procedure employs the rotating wave approximation together with a decomposition of a unitary matrix into simpler matrix factors with specified structure. Applications to state preparation and observation are also provided.
