Abstract

Femtosecond Laser Electronic Excitation Tagging (FLEET) and Coherent Anti-Stoke Raman Spectroscopy (CARS) were used to measure free stream flows in the Hypervelocity Expansion Tunnel (HXT) at Texas A&M University. Hypersonic flows of air and nitrogen with a Mach number of 8.5 and stagnation enthalpies ranging from 1.8 to 7.3 MJ/kg were probed. Despite short test times and flows with bright, broadband background emission, accurate FLEET velocity measurements were achieved. Theoretical computations of the HXT facility were validated using the measured FLEET velocities. In addition, CARS measurements targeting nitrogen were used to estimate the vibrational temperatures of free stream molecules. The CARS measurements revealed the presence of slight thermal non-equilibrium in the free stream flows.
