Abstract

A NEW APPROXIMATE TECHNIQUE FOR EVALUATING PERFORMANCE OF DIGITAL FIBER-OPTIC SYSTEMS EMPLOYING IN AVALANCHE PHOTODIODERECEIVER IS PRESENTED. THE ESSENCE OF THE NEW TECHNIQUE IS A POINT TRANSFORMATION, THE NORMALIZING TRANSFORM, WHICH CONVERTS THE SIGNAL-DEPENDENT NOISE ASSOCIATED WITH PHOTODETECTION AND AVALANCHE GAIN FLUCTUATIONS INTO SIGNAL-INDEPENDENT NOISE. THE NEW TECHNIQUE IS AS SIMPLE AS A GAUSSIAN APPROXIMATION YET IS MORE ACCURATE.
