Abstract

The combination of additional heating of ≲1 MW neutral beam injection and wall conditioning (boronization, titanium gettering and inter-shot helium-glow-discharge cleaning) has allowed the START spherical tokamak to achieve record beta values of β T∼ 32%. Here we report the more recent demonstration of a transition to a higher confinement mode.
