Abstract

The string method was used to study the energy landscape and thermally activated switching of submicron-sized ferromagnetic elements. It was found that the switching proceeds by two generic scenario, domain-wall propagation and reconnection followed by edge domain switching and vortex nucleation at the boundary followed by vortex propagation through the sample. The major advantages of the string method used in this study were presented.
