Electrodeless capacitive discharge sustained by repetitive high-voltage pulses

A pulsed-periodic discharge sustained by repetitive high-voltage pulses applied to plane electrodes which are isolated from the plasma by dielectric plates is examined. A nonself-sustaining current is fed through the ionized gas and some other electrodes in order to provide the power used for laser pumping. The macroscopic characteristics (plasma density, current, etc.) and the spatial and temporal structure of the pulsed discharge are calculated, including a positive space-charge layer and the formation of a beam of fast electrons. The calculations are done on the basis of a kinetic equation, in a hydrodynamic approximation, and in the framework of a simple electrical model. The results are compared and the contributions of various physical factors are clarified.
