Four permutation instructions and an underlying methodolgy for efficiently performing arbitrary n-bit permutations in programmable processors was developed. The efficient permutation instructions were discussed for fast software cryptography. Fast permutations in software facilitated multimedia processing, combining high performance with flexibility and low cost.
