Abstract

The effects of two different techniques for implementing variable mesh sizes in multistep formulas are investigated. It is proved that one is stable for a greater variation in step sizes than the other with Adams formulas, but that both are stable when the rate of step changing is small with any multistep formula. The practical implications of these results are discussed.
