In the first of these short articles, Wang Jun, the Deputy Director-General of the Energy Bureau in the recently created National Development and Reform Commission (which replaces the State Development and Planning Commission), offers a broad energy policy perspective. The second, by Cao Xianghong of the China Petrochemical Corporation (SINOPEC), describes the surprisingly widespread existing and planned use of coal gasification at China{\textquoteright}s largest integrated energy and chemicals company. The third short article, by Zheng Fangneng, summarizes the research and development efforts on clean coal technology supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The fourth short article, by Jiang Zhesheng, the former Deputy Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology, China{\textquoteright}s State Power Corporation, describes the ongoing restructuring of the mix of power sector technologies in pursuit of sustainable development.",
