Abstract
A college degree yields substantial economic returns. By the early twenty-first century, college graduates’ earnings were about 90 percent higher than those of their high school graduate counterparts, a premium that has increased over the last quarter century (Autor, Katz, and Kearney 2008). College attainment is also related to better health, longevity, happiness, and a host of extra-economic outcomes (Ross and Mirowsky 1999; Pallas 2000; Rowley and Hurtado 2003; Attewell and Lavin 2007; Stevens, Armstrong, and Arum 2008).
