Abstract

The familiar example of Taylor dispersion in pipe flow is extended to the case of laminar flows with velocity variations in the streamwise direction. The effective dispersivity is shown to depend on the streamwise coordinate. The generic scheme is illustrated by the simple example of radial source (sink) flows in two and three dimensions, and the distinctive results for the two cases are contrasted.
