Abstract

In this work we present direct measurement of electron numbers in plasma filament produced by femtosecond laser pulse by multiphoton ionization (MPI) of air, O2 and Xe at atmospheric pressure. We show that at high laser beam intensities, Kerr non-linearity has significant effect on spatial laser intensity distribution which results in deviation from Gaussian beam. At low intensities, pure MPI regime, we determine electron density at the center of the plasma filament for air and O2. This method is based on measurement of absolute number of electrons by elastic scattering of microwaves by the plasma filament.
