Diffraction of strong shock waves by a sharp compressive corner

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

The diffraction of strong shock waves by a sharp compressive corner has been investigated analytically by using real gas properties, and experimentally by employing a dual- frequency laser Mach- Zehnder interferometer in a 4x7 in. hypersonic shock tube. The appearance of irregular Mach reflection is found to be a gas dynamic rather than a chemical- kinetic phenomenon. An approximate solution was obtained for the primary triple- point trajectory angle as a function of the incident shock Mach number and the wedge angle. Except for small wedge angles and strong incident shock waves the agreement with expriment is quite good.
