Abstract
We have observed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the borocarbide superconductor, LuNi2B2C, under pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T. The observed oscillation frequency, 288 + 7 T, corresponds to a cross section of 2.75 × 10−2 ±0.07 × 10−2 Å−2. The temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitude provides a cyclotron effective mass of [formula omitted] in the ab plane. By comparison with the results of band structure calculations, the oscillation can be assigned to a Lu 5d band which forms a small Fermi pocket near the Γ point. These results support the validity of the band structure calculation as a good starting point for understanding this class of superconductors.
