Abstract

Thin layers of granular materials with water filling the pore space but with air above are investigated. A vibration is applied to these layers. It is shown that beyond a critical drive parameter, a heap-shaped convecting domains of nontrivial topology can be observed. This topology exhibit cracks as the forcing amplitude is increased.
