Abstract

Inelastic resonant X-ray scattering is carried out on SrCuO2, a model quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 Mott insulator. Tuning excitation energy to a previously unstudied resonance allows insight into the effect of the intermediate state coupling to the fundamental charge modes exhibited by the sample. Redistribution of momentum and energy resolved spectral weight at the new resonance permits identification of features resembling the strong coupling prediction for the modes. Despite expected resonance enhancement, no spinon-like modes are observed above 0.5 eV (two-spinon threshold) in the measured scattering spectra.
