Abstract

This paper covers in detail the design and analysis of the new cryo-pump for the Alcator C-Mod tokamak. We focus on detailing the work done to ensure that the cryopump meets all of the technical requirements for this project. In particular, the following topics will be discussed: calculation of cryopump pumping speed, sizing of the helium tube, boiling heat transfer of liquid helium inside the tube, cryo-pump protective shelf design/support, design of the supports for the cryo-pump and its components, heat loss thru the supports for the helium tube, number of cry-pump sections for the ease of installation, cryogenic system design, installation procedure, experiments to qualify the new cryo pump.
