N2 - The field equations, which emerge from string theory, are solved to leading order in α′ for the case of black hole space-times. We show how the results fit into a broader outlook on string theory and quantum gravity. In particular, it seems that string theory could cure some of the paradoxes associated with black hole evaporation.
