Abstract
On the CARG database and its related cartographic production, one problem difficult to solve was the symbolic representation of the polygonal elements such as alluvial conoid, debris flow, etc. In fact those polygons are distinguished by characteristic fan shape, dimensions, orientation and position of which are extremely variable. With the advent of the Representation on ArcGIS 9.2, with which it's possible associate a symbol and change his space extent and orientation based on values directly stored in the GeoDataBase, this problem had overtaken. Exploiting some empirical expression that use the geometrical parameter called "shape index", we produced automatic procedures with the Model Builder that allow us to create these geo-thematic elements in a automatic way perfectly coherent with the geologicalcartographic tradition.
