Abstract

The need of forecasting river flows arises whenever a river authority must make controls to maintain prespecified flows at various points along a river reach. A linear, time invariant model for flow routing was developed for a river having both gaged and ungaged tributary inflows. The resulting model was incorporated within a Kalman filter and applied to the River Dee in Wales. The structure allowed the tributaries to be considered as either known inputs or estimated based upon a forecasting model for each subcatchment. Refs.
