Abstract

According to orthodoxy, contemporary physics strongly supports Eternalism over Presentism. However, there is an overlooked aspect of contemporary physics that strongly supports Presentism over Eternalism. In particular, the fundamental laws of physics are plausibly Markovian, so that the causal influence of the past on the future is always screened off by the present. If Eternalism is true, there is no plausible explanation for this fact. However, there are independently motivated versions of Presentism that entail that the fundamental laws of physics must be Markovian. Physics therefore does not uniformly support Eternalism. In fact, it’s plausible that physics better supports Presentism.
