Abstract
Through an optical switch, continuous wave (CW) light is controlled by input return-to-zero (RZ) data pulses through a very broad switching window to generate an non-return-to-zero signal (NRZ). Hence, the shape of the NRZ data signal will be decided by the shape of the switching window, which results in very large ripples on the output NRZ eye diagram. However, in practical applications, the nonlinear interaction time will directly decide the speed of wavelength converters for format conversion. This paper demonstrates high performance all-optical format conversion between RZ and NRZ using a wavelength converter.
